Wisconsin Vehicle Bill of Sale (Free Template)
The short answer: A Wisconsin vehicle bill of sale records who sold what to whom, for how much, and when. It isn’t required for every sale, but it’s your proof the car — and its liability — is no longer yours. A handwritten bill of sale is valid as long as it includes the essentials. Copy the free template below.
This pairs with how to sign over a Wisconsin title — the title transfers ownership; the bill of sale is your personal record of the deal.
What a Wisconsin bill of sale must include
For it to hold up, include:
- Vehicle details: year, make, model, and VIN
- Odometer reading at sale (if applicable)
- Sale price and date of sale
- Seller: printed name, address, phone number, signature
- Buyer: printed name, address, phone number, signature
- “As-is” note for a junk/used vehicle sold without warranty

Keep a copy for your records; give a copy to the buyer. For a junk sale, this plus a properly signed-over title is a clean paper trail.
Does a bill of sale replace the title?
No. The title legally transfers ownership; the bill of sale is a supporting record of the transaction. You generally want both — see the documents you need to sell a junk car.
Selling a junk car specifically
When you sell an end-of-life vehicle to an established junk-car buyer, the title transfer is completed with you at pickup, and a bill of sale adds your own record on top. If the title is lost, request a replacement from WisDOT (Form MV2119) before the sale. A bill of sale supports the title; it doesn’t replace it.
