Cancelling Registration and Insurance After You Junk a Car
The short answer: After your junk car is picked up and paid for, close out the two things that tie it to you: the registration (in Wisconsin that mostly means dealing with your plates — WisDOT updates the record once the vehicle is retitled) and your insurance on that car. Order matters — wait until the car is actually gone and paid for before you drop coverage.
These are the “after the tow” steps most sellers forget, and skipping them means paying for — or being liable for — a car you no longer own. This is the post-sale companion to what to do with your plates.
Do this in the right order
- Complete the sale — car picked up, title signed over, cash in hand.
- Remove your plates (if you haven’t) — see the plates guide.
- Close out the registration side — see below.
- Then cancel or transfer your insurance.
Closing out the registration
In Wisconsin, registration is tied to your plates, and WisDOT updates the vehicle record to show the new owner once the vehicle is retitled. What WisDOT asks of you as the seller:
- Keep or destroy the plates. Move them to another vehicle you own, or cut them up. Don’t return them to the DMV.
- If the plates left with the car, file a License Plates Cancellation Application (Form MV2514).
- If you sold to another individual, complete WisDOT’s online seller notification.
- Ignore a later renewal notice for those plates, unless you moved them to another vehicle.
- Keep a record of the sale, such as your bill of sale.
`[CONFIRM]` whether any registration-fee refund applies to your plate type — verify at wisconsindot.gov.
Cancelling your insurance — timing is everything
Call your insurer only after the car is picked up and paid for:
- If you’re replacing the car: transfer the policy to the new vehicle rather than cancelling, to avoid a coverage gap.
- If you’re not: cancel coverage on that vehicle. Ask about any prorated refund for unused premium.
Don’t cancel insurance the day before pickup. If plans slip, you don’t want the car uninsured while it’s still yours and sitting in your driveway. Cancel once it’s gone.
Why bother after the car’s gone?
Two reasons: money (you stop paying registration and premiums on a car you don’t own) and liability (closing the registration ties off any association between you and the vehicle). It’s five minutes that prevents months of small headaches.

Frequently asked questions
When should I cancel insurance after junking my car?
Right after the car is picked up and paid for — not before. If you’re getting another car, transfer the policy instead of cancelling to avoid a gap.
Do I need to cancel my registration after selling a junk car in Wisconsin?
Mostly it’s about the plates: remove them, then transfer or destroy them. WisDOT updates the record when the vehicle is retitled. If the plates left with the car, use Form MV2514 to cancel them.
Will I get a refund on registration or insurance?
Sometimes. Insurers often refund unused premium; registration refunds depend on plate type and timing. Ask each directly.
What happens if I don't cancel them?
You may keep paying for a car you don’t own, and the vehicle can stay associated with your name in state records.
