How to Clear a Lien Before Selling a Junk Car
The short answer: If a lender financed your car, they hold a lien on the title and have a legal claim until the loan is paid. To sell cleanly, you need a lien release — proof from the lender that the loan is satisfied. Once the lien is released, the title is fully yours to sign over.
A lien is one of the few things that can genuinely hold up a junk-car sale, so it’s worth sorting first. This pairs with the documents you need to sell a junk car.

What a lien is (and why it blocks a sale)
When you finance a vehicle, the lender is recorded as the lienholder on the title. Until the loan is paid off, they have a claim on the car — which means you can’t fully transfer ownership without their release. A buyer (including a salvage buyer) can’t take clean title while an active lien is on it.
How to get a lien release in Wisconsin
- Contact your lender and confirm the loan is paid in full (or pay the remaining balance).
- Request the lien release — depending on the lender, this is a released title, a separate lien-release document, or an electronic release filed with the Wisconsin DMV.
- Get it in writing. Keep the release with your title so you can show the lien is cleared.
`[CONFIRM]` Wisconsin uses an electronic lien and title (ELT) system with many lenders; the exact release format varies by lender. Verify your lender’s process and current DMV steps at wisconsindot.gov.
What if the loan is already paid but the title still shows a lien?
This is common — the loan’s done, but the title was never updated. Contact the lender for a formal lien release, or follow the Wisconsin DMV process to have the lien removed from the record before you sell.
Can you sell a junk car that still has a lien?
Generally not cleanly — the lienholder’s claim comes first. The practical path is: clear the lien, then sell. If the car isn’t worth the payoff, talk to your lender about options. Once the lien is released, signing over the title is straightforward.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove a lien from my car title in Wisconsin?
Pay off (or confirm payoff of) the loan, request a lien release from your lender, and keep the written release with your title. Wisconsin’s ELT system means many releases are handled electronically.
Can I junk a car that isn't paid off?
Not cleanly while the lien is active — the lender has the first claim. Clear the lien first, or discuss options with your lender.
My loan is paid but the title still shows the lienholder — what do I do?
Ask the lender for a formal lien release, or use the Wisconsin DMV process to update the title record.
