Scrap Yard vs Junk Car Buyer: Which One Pays You More?
A scrap yard pays you for the metal in a car you bring to its scale, while a junk car buyer pays for the whole vehicle and comes to get it. For most people scrapping a car in Milwaukee, the buyer leaves more cash in hand once you count the tow, your time and the parts a scale doesn’t pay for.
That isn’t true in every case. If you already have a trailer, live near a yard and the car is stripped to bare steel, the scale can make sense. This guide lays out how each option works so you can compare them on the same terms.
How a scrap yard pays
A scrap yard, sometimes called a metal recycler, buys material by weight. You bring it in, it’s weighed, and you’re paid the yard’s posted rate for that grade of metal.
For a car, that usually means:
- You deliver it. You arrange and pay for the tow, or haul it on your own trailer.
- It’s weighed and graded. The yard pays a rate for the vehicle as scrap. It doesn’t pay separately for parts that still have resale value.
- Rules apply. Many yards have requirements about proof of ownership, drained fluids, tires or batteries. Call ahead to ask what yours accepts.
- You work on their hours. Scales keep set hours, and lines can be long.
Scrap yards are good at what they do: processing metal at volume. They’re just not set up to value a car as anything more than metal.
How a junk car buyer pays
A junk car buyer prices the whole vehicle, not just its weight. That covers the metal plus parts that can be recovered, like the catalytic converter, wheels and battery.
The process usually looks like this:
- You describe the car by phone or online form, with the VIN and condition.
- You get a quote for the whole vehicle.
- A truck comes to you. Towing is typically free.
- You’re paid at pickup once the car matches what you described and the title is signed over.
You don’t move the car, wait at a scale or sort out fluids. The buyer handles that after the car leaves.
Example
Say you’ve got a non-running 2007 hatchback in a Walker’s Point garage and a scrap yard across town that pays by weight. To use the yard, you’d first hire a tow or borrow a truck and trailer. Then you’d wait your turn at the scale and check whether the yard wants the fluids drained or the battery pulled. The scale pays for the metal only. Before you choose, put the yard’s number, minus the tow and your afternoon, next to a whole-car offer with free pickup.
Side-by-side: what you actually keep
The fair way to compare is the cash you keep after costs, not the headline number.
| Scrap yard | Junk car buyer | |
|---|---|---|
| What’s paid for | Metal weight only | Whole vehicle: metal plus parts |
| Who moves the car | You | The buyer |
| Towing cost | Yours | Usually free |
| Time | Drive, wait, weigh | One visit at your curb |
| Non-running car | Needs a tow | Picked up as-is |
| Payment | At the scale | At pickup |
Run the scrap yard number this way: yard payout − tow cost − your time. Then compare it to the buyer’s firm offer with free towing.
When a scrap yard makes sense
A scrap yard can be the better choice when:
- The car is already stripped, so there are no parts left to pay for.
- You own a trailer or truck and can haul it yourself.
- You live close to the yard and have a free afternoon.
- You’re also hauling other scrap metal and want one trip.
In those cases the parts value a buyer would add is small, and you’re not paying for a tow.
When a junk car buyer makes sense
A buyer usually wins when:
- The car doesn’t run or can’t be driven legally.
- The car is complete, with the converter, wheels and major parts on it.
- You don’t have a way to move it.
- You want one short visit instead of a trip to the scale.
If a car isn’t moving under its own power, a tow alone can eat a large share of a scrap check.
Questions to ask either one before you commit
Whichever route you choose, ask:
- Is the price firm, and what could change it?
- Is there any fee for towing, fuel or processing?
- What paperwork do you need? In Wisconsin, the signed certificate of title is the standard.
- How and when do I get paid?
If you’ve decided to sell to a buyer, it helps to know what to do before the tow truck arrives. And if a salvage yard that sells used parts is also on your list, read thinking about a junkyard? for how those differ.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to scrap a car or sell it to a junk car buyer?
For most owners, selling to a junk car buyer leaves more money in hand, because the buyer pays for parts as well as metal and tows for free. A scrap yard pays for weight only, and you cover the cost of getting the car there. A scrap yard can win if the car is already stripped and you can haul it yourself.
How do scrap yards pay for cars?
Scrap yards pay by weight at their posted rate for that grade of metal. You deliver the vehicle, it’s weighed, and you’re paid for it as scrap. Most yards don’t add value for working parts like a catalytic converter or alternator. Many have rules about ownership papers, fluids and batteries, so call the yard before you haul anything in.
Will a scrap yard take a car that doesn't run?
Many will, but you need to get it there. That means paying for a tow or loading it onto a trailer yourself, which cuts into the payout. A junk car buyer collects non-running cars where they sit, usually with free towing, so you don’t have to move the car at all. Compare both totals after those costs.
Do I need a title to scrap a car in Wisconsin?
The Wisconsin certificate of title is the standard proof of ownership, and both yards and buyers will generally ask for it. If you’ve lost yours, WisDOT issues replacement titles using Form MV2119. If your situation is different from that, call us about your situation before you book anything.
