Wisconsin Car Title Transfer: How to Sign Over a Junk Car

The short answer: To transfer a Wisconsin title when you sell a car, sign and date the seller’s signature area on the certificate of title, complete the odometer disclosure, and hand the title to the buyer. When you sell to an established buyer, they complete the transfer paperwork with you — and filing it with the Wisconsin DMV is what officially ends your ownership and liability.

This guide assumes you have the title (if you don’t, start with the documents you need to sell a junk car, which covers replacing a lost title). Getting the sign-over right is what keeps the car — and anything that happens with it later — from staying in your name.

Badger Junk Cars (local, insured junk-car buyer, since 2014) completes the transfer paperwork with you at pickup. Questions first? Call (414) 367-7245.

Where to sign a Wisconsin title

On the Wisconsin Certificate of Title there’s a section for the selling owner’s signature. Sign and date it exactly as your name appears on the front of the title. If the title lists two owners joined by “and,” both must sign.

Sign only the seller’s area. Leave the rest for the buyer to complete — we’ll fill in the buyer’s portion at pickup.

Complete the odometer disclosure

The title includes an odometer line. Record the mileage accurately at the time of sale. Model-year 2010 and older vehicles are generally exempt from odometer disclosure; 2011-and-newer vehicles need it for 20 years — see odometer rules for older vehicles for the detail. WisDOT also asks the seller to complete the title’s brand disclosure (for example, whether the car carries a salvage or flood brand).

Don’t “jump” the title

Title jumping — reselling a car without ever putting the title in your own name — is illegal in Wisconsin. If the car isn’t titled to you (for example, you bought it informally and never transferred it), sort that out before selling, or work with an established buyer who processes the transfer properly.

How the DMV filing completes the transfer

Signing the title hands over ownership, but the transfer isn’t “closed” until it’s filed with the Wisconsin DMV. An established buyer completes and files the transfer, which is what removes the vehicle from your name in the state’s records. That paper trail is your protection — it’s the proof the car is no longer your responsibility.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I sign a Wisconsin car title to sell it?

In the selling owner’s signature section on the certificate of title. Sign and date it; if two owners are listed with “and,” both sign.

Do both owners have to sign a Wisconsin title?

If the names are joined by “and,” yes — both signatures are required. If joined by “or,” typically one can sign. Confirm against your specific title.

What happens if I don't transfer the title properly?

The car can stay in your name in DMV records, leaving you potentially liable for it. Selling to an established buyer who files the transfer prevents that.

Can I transfer a title without the buyer present?

For a junk sale, the transfer is completed with the buyer at pickup. Don’t sign the title over to a blank/unknown party.
