Documents You Need to Sell a Junk Car in Wisconsin

The short answer: For a standard junk-car sale in Wisconsin you need the vehicle title (signed over to the buyer) and a photo ID that matches the name on it. If there’s a loan on the car you’ll also need a lien release, and a bill of sale is strongly recommended to record the transfer. Lost the title? WisDOT issues replacements with Form MV2119.

1. The certificate of title (your main document)

The title is the primary proof you own the car, and signing it over is what legally makes it the buyer’s. You’ll sign and date the seller’s section and complete the odometer line. Because getting this part right is what protects you, we cover it on its own page: how to sign over a Wisconsin car title →.

2. A photo ID

A valid driver’s license or state ID that matches the name on the title. This is a simple fraud check every legitimate buyer makes — don’t be surprised (or suspicious of a buyer who doesn’t ask).

3. A lien release (only if there was a loan)

If you financed the car, the lender (the “lienholder”) is listed on the title and technically has a claim until the loan is paid. Before you can cleanly sell, that lien needs to be released — usually a document or title notation from the lender. Details here: how to clear a lien before selling →.

Wisconsin doesn’t require a separate bill of sale for every sale, but you want one: it records the date, the price, and — most importantly — the moment the car stopped being your responsibility. We provide a ready-to-use one: Wisconsin vehicle bill of sale (free template) →.

5. If your title is lost or damaged

The normal Wisconsin process is to request a replacement title from WisDOT using Form MV2119 (Replacement Title Application), by mail or at a DMV service center. The application must be signed by the current owner on record, and WisDOT lists the fee on the form. If a lien is still recorded, clear it first. If your situation doesn’t fit that, call us about your situation. Whoever you sell to, keep a bill of sale as your record.

6. Odometer disclosure

When you sign the title over, you may need to record the vehicle’s mileage — but model-year 2010 and older vehicles are exempt, and 2011-and-newer vehicles need it for 20 years. Full detail: odometer rules for older vehicles →.
